About:
The University of British Columbia Department of Orthopaedics offers a 12 month comprehensive orthopaedic foot & ankle fellowship for 3 to 4 fellows per year. Training is preceptor-based, under the supervision of 4 fellowship-trained orthopaedic foot & ankle surgeons (Dr. M. Penner, Dr. A. Veljkovic, Dr. K. Wing, and Dr. A. Younger). The fellowship is located at St. Paul’s Hospital and the Footbridge Clinic for Integrated musculoskeletal care in downtown Vancouver, BC. The site(s) serve as tertiary care centre(s) for all complex adult foot and ankle problems for the province of British Columbia (pop. 4.5 million).
This fellowship provides extensive exposure (up to 1000 cases/yr) to all aspects of adult foot & ankle surgery (Ankle Replacement, basic & complex fusions and osteotomies, forefoot reconstruction, diabetic foot problems, sports medicine, acute fractures, and post-traumatic, flatfoot, congenital, and neurological deformities).
Requirements:
Fellows are expected to participate in the Foot & Ankle Screening & Rapid Access Clinic, the Foot & Ankle Consultation and follow up clinic at the Footbridge Clinic for Integrated Musculoskeletal Care, take first call at St. Paul’s hospital (3-5 home calls/month) with the lower extremity staff, and contribute to the F&A Research Office. This program is a major contributor to the ongoing multi-center Canadian Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society ankle arthritis outcome study. One major research presentation and publication is expected. Participation in resident and medical student teaching, and in weekly foot & ankle rounds is required.
