About:
This fellowship is designed to allow the Fellow to increase their knowledge in the field of orthopaedic trauma surgery. There is an emphasis on the assessment and management of multiply-injured patients, and major injuries resulting from blunt trauma. Vancouver Acute functions as a Level I trauma center. The fellowship concentrates on the treatment of injuries to the pelvis and extremities and their early and late complications.
Requirements:
- Clinical care of patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting
- Teaching of residents and medical students, including formal rounds teaching once/month on average
- Completion of one research project for research day/submission to international meeting is required
- Presentation at Orthopaedic Grand Rounds once during the year
Goals & Objectives:
To provide society with leaders in orthopaedic trauma care and to provide the Fellows with a learning environment for their development to become productive members in the academic orthopaedic trauma community and effective orthopaedic educators.
- Refine decision-making. Advance your decision-making skills. Understand the basic principles of a condition or a situation and build on previous knowledge to make reasoned, logical decisions.
- Critical thinking. Begin to critically analyze the literature and determine what you consider valid based upon your experience and the experience of others (evidence-based surgery).
- Understand the research process. Take part in the complete spectrum of clinical and basic research. Understand both the clinical and basic research process.
- Surgical and clinical skills improvement. Improve surgical skills with appropriate Fellow level cases. Learn how to manage complex periarticular and diaphyseal fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures, and musculoskeletal injuries in critically injured patients. Evaluate and treat musculoskeletal infections, non-unions, and mal-unions.
- Administration. Learn how to understand the administrative and business aspects of surgical practice.
